Chef Strikes back is a 2D isometric Cooking Sim hack and slash where you get to feed the good customers and kill the bad ones! As you start your shift you will be bombarded with order by customers who either want spaghetti or pizza, not everyone is perfect if you miss an order you will suffer the consequences that customer brings.

Story

Being a solo chef is no easy job, cook, clean and wait the customers without losing your temper. Nobody is perfect, you're bound to miss someone, but in this restaurant, "the customer is always dangerous". Defend yourself as you serve the good customers and do everything you can to finish the shift alive, all while getting a good review of course.

Level Design

References

To design the layout of the levels, we took inspiration from european and north american italian restaurants, and studied architecture books like Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language and The Timeless way of building.

We also took a tour of Vancouver's Italian restaurants and moved in the space as well as took pictures, to analyze how it feels to be in one of these restaurants.

Floor zones

It was important to separate the Chef's Space (kitchen area), the restaurant space, and the entrance visually, to let players feel differently about the different environments, and understand their function at a glance.

We went with tiles for the kitchen, wood for the restaurant, and bricks for the entrance, for a noticeable contrast.

Breaking Realism

Once we understood deeply how to reproduce these restaurants faithfully, we allowed ourselves to break realism for the sake of fun and difficulty, and went a little bit crazy: entrance through the kitchen, kitchen spread out through the restaurant etc.
